The concept of “survival” in Confucianism

“Survival” refers to the basic instincts of human beings to live. A stable society can exist only when people fulfill their needs to be properly fed and sheltered. Confucius once said that a good ruler must ensure that his subjects need not worry about food, clothing, and the safety of their lives and property; most importantly, the ruler needs to be able to gain the trust of his subjects and fulfill the commitments and promises he has made to the people.
